EU implements stringent laws. Is this political or all for the safety of its citizens?
EU has always been strict with its digital laws. And while many organizations have faced scrutiny for their data handling and criticized the EU for doing so, the European Union does not seem to budge.
This time, Meta’s messaging tool, WhatsApp, may be under scrutiny.
But why? It’s not because of a breach of data. Not as of now, at least.
However, the scrutiny has to do with the number of active monthly EU users on WhatsApp. According to Bloomberg, the app is clocking 45 million users monthly from the Union and is now considered a ‘Very Large Online Platform.’
This number of active users means that Meta will now have to provide additional safeguards for its EU users and, as part of the VLOP designation, will face stricter data control by the EU.
For many, this is seen as a way for the Union to control the growing influence American tech companies have in the EU.
